Resources for safe travel

International travel involves distinct complexities and risks, and it is important to make sure you are properly prepared prior to travel. We offer a variety of resources that can help you have a safe and successful trip.

The international risk management team conducts one-on-one consultations with travelers to review planned itineraries and provide advice on health, safety, security, and risk management concerns. Our staff rely on a variety of resources including analyst briefings, open source databases, consultation with the U.S. State Department, and years of international travel experience. Contact the team to schedule a consultation.

The international risk management team regularly assesses risk around the world and consults with our travel security intelligence provider to determine overall risk ratings for countries.

Destination ratings broadly assess travel risk, but assessing the risk of a specific trip is a nuanced process that considers destination risk ratings and many other factors. In order to make these assessments, an individualized itinerary review of higher-risk destinations is required prior to departure.

Itinerary reviews are required before travel to high (4) or critical (5) risk destinations and encouraged for medium (3) risk destinations. Employees who are traveling with students should follow the student requirements.

Students traveling to medium (3) risk or higher destinations must complete an itinerary review and receive approval from the Study Abroad Risk Management Committee (SARMC) prior to travel unless travel is part of a study abroad program that has already received approval.

Check out the resource section of this page and our Travel Advice and Best Practices page for additional resources to research your destination. You can also request an itinerary review for a consultation if you are considering a trip to a destination and want to find out more about the risks there.
